The Importance of Community
By Bonnie & Phil Parker
Just the other day, the two of us were looking back at our 5+ years living in Valencia
Lakes and the one recollection that stood out the most was recognizing all the wonderful
connections we’ve made. Not knowing anyone on arrival and now being surrounded by
neighbors who’ve become friends, we both feel abundantly blessed. There’ve been so many
relationships that developed through our individual volunteering, club attendance, driveway
gatherings in our ‘neighborhood’, spiritual worship community and introductions that
developed into friends.
Before relocating to Florida, we had downsized from a large home to apartment living.
We viewed this step as a good decision. Individuals we met were eager to meet others and we
quickly set up Sunday night grilling gatherings poolside. Connecting with one another offered
us a sense of well-being. We sought out like-minded apartment dwellers and they were also
eager to connect with us and each other. Both of us knew that connecting and strengthening
relationships were top priority in our new community. We have been richly rewarded in
following up with what we set out to do!
Bonnie shares that prior to our move she read a fascinating book by Sarah Smiley:
Dinner with The Smileys. ’52 guests take turns filling a military father’s dinner table chair while
he serves his yearlong deployment.’ Once settled, we decided to invite couples (or singles) we
met to join us for brunch on a Saturday or Sunday. We did this monthly for two years. Six
individuals each time and, without a doubt, these gatherings brought us so much joy because of
not only by strengthening our connections, but those that attended also got to expand their
relationships by meeting others. ‘Brunch with The Parkers’ offered us unlimited opportunities
that would not likely have occurred had we not taken the lead to reach out to new and current
residents.
We just can’t emphasize enough the heartfelt joy that comes from seeking and creating
connections. Sharing through meals, activities, helping one another as needed or just knowing
that there exists mutual caring are some of the many reasons to make connections count. You
just never know who you’ll meet and the difference you can make in someone’s life. You never
know who you will meet and the difference that person can make in your life. Approach life
with joy. Meet others with curiosity and enthusiasm. We hope you value community as much
as we do!
